About the Artist
(he/they)

Working across sculpture, illustration and text the Modal Menagerist looks to examine, uncover and mythologise humanity’s collective creative urge.

Like an ouroboros their making process is driven by the same urge that it seeks to explore. The writhing subcutaneous compulsion to breach the barriers between imagined and actual which has influenced all aspects of their life has been a constant drumbeat, and companion, within the heads and hearts of our ancestors since before Homo began to Sapiens.

Developing iteratively through experimentation and improvisation they seek to test the limits and capabilities of the techniques and materials at their disposal as well as their own technical skills and knowledge. Enfolding, embracing and incorporating the inevitable failures and imperfections into their finished pieces.

Creative flow consists of multiple experiential dimensions, making all of those that chase this state dimensional travellers.  What if those spaces in-between are as rich with fertile and varied life as the waters of our Earth?  And what if travellers don't always come back alone?

Imagining and manifesting an ecosystem independent of, but feeding upon, human creativity the Menagerist's work is informed by their passion for story-telling, mythology, folklore and an unrelenting fascination with the liminalities between the grotesque and the divine.
